The municipality is the Town of Weston, a civil town in Marathon County, Wisconsin (Census county subdivision GEOID 5507386050; WI DOA code 37082).

The Town of Weston is separate from the Village of Weston (15,723 residents in 2020), which was carved from it, and from the Town of Weston in Clark County (686 in 2020).

A five-member town board governs the town: a chairman and four supervisors, plus an elected clerk/treasurer. All positions carry two-year terms.

The town covers 8.612 square miles of land and 0.018 square miles of water.

The town borders the Town of Wausau to the north, the Cities of Wausau and Schofield to the west, the Town of Ringle to the east, the Village of Weston to the south, and the Town of Easton to the northeast. It lies east of I-39/US 51 and north of State Highway 29.

The Lower Eau Claire River meanders along the town's south border. Big Sandy Creek and its tributary, Little Sandy Creek, flow diagonally through the center of the town to the Eau Claire just east of County Highway X.

About two-thirds of the town lies within the Village of Weston/Town of Weston extraterritorial zoning area.

The plan's stated vision is to preserve the town's rural, natural, and agricultural character while keeping an affordable town tax rate. Agriculture employs only a small share of residents.

The Mountain Bay Metropolitan Police Department (211 Grand Ave, Rothschild) serves the town under contract, along with the Villages of Rothschild and Weston and the City of Schofield. The town site says it has 37 sworn officers.

The South Area Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) District provides fire, EMS, and rescue. It began January 1, 2014, runs stations at 224225 Hummingbird Rd (Rib Mountain) and 5303 Mesker St (Weston), and its EMS covers about 36,000 people over nearly 300 square miles.

No library lies in the town. Residents use the Marathon County Public Library, including the main library at 300 1st St. in Wausau and the Rothschild Area Branch.

No hospital lies in the town. The plan names Marshfield Medical Center-Weston and Aspirus Wausau Hospital as the nearby hospitals.

The town owns and manages no public parks; residents use the Village of Weston system. Marathon County transferred Yellowbanks Park, on the Eau Claire River by Camp Phillips Road, to the Town of Weston in 1993, and it is now part of the village park system.

The Lower Eau Claire River supports paddling and fishing, and the plan notes an emerging local push for a formal water trail along it.

The Mountain-Bay Trail follows the 1880 Milwaukee, Lake Shore and Western rail corridor built through the original Town of Weston.

The town's recurring notices are civic services: a fall bulk-item drop-off, a paper shred day, and an e-recycling collection (all posted September 8, 2026), plus a rabies vaccine clinic notice posted February 17, 2026. No town festival was found.

County Highway J gives the town quick access to State Highway 29. The town has no public water or sewer, which the plan says limits entry-level and higher-density housing.

The Marathon County Board created the Town of Eau Claire on November 12, 1856, covering land now in the Villages of Weston, Kronenwetter, and Rothschild, the Town of Rib Mountain, and the City of Schofield. It was renamed Weston in 1859, reportedly after an early settler who ran a sawmill at Callon.

The urban center incorporated as the Village of Weston in 1996, leaving the rural sections north of the Eau Claire River as the Town of Weston. The town's About page gives the year as 1997.

Sawmills lined the Eau Claire River in the lumber era, near the Ross Avenue Bridge, near Kellyland Park, and at today's Dells of the Eau Claire County Park. John B. DuBay built the first dam and mill. A few pilings east of the Ross Avenue Bridge are the main remaining trace.

The first recorded town election was in 1869. The Wisconsin Valley Railroad reached Weston in 1874, and the Milwaukee, Lake Shore and Western followed in 1880.

Until 1905 the town included what is now the Town of Rib Mountain, which split off under the name Erickson.
