With Emmet and Cleveland to the west, the town was locally known as an Irish settlement of famine-era immigrants who arrived by the 1850s. Czech (Bohemian) settlers joined them by the 1890s in the Rocky Ridge area.

The town's primary early settlement was Little Bull Falls on the Wisconsin River, later the City of Mosinee. Joseph Dessert, a Canadian fur trader, arrived in 1844 and soon took over the mill at the falls.

Moon, on the town's southern edge bordering Bergen, was first settled in 1887. A sawmill opened there in 1889, and by the mid-1890s the settlement had 33 families and 160 loggers working nearby.
