Public schools in the eight-county Wausau Wire footprint enrolled 57,616 students across 41 DPI district entities on the Third Friday of September 2025, 18,444 of them in the eight districts headquartered in Marathon County. The Wausau School District (7,590) and the D.C. Everest Area School District (5,743) are the two largest in the core, followed by Mosinee (1,879); in the edge counties the Stevens Point Area (6,763) and Wisconsin Rapids (4,436) districts lead. 31 of those 41 entities enrolled fewer students than in 2024-25, and Wausau closed or repurposed four elementary schools at the end of 2024-25. Wausau's enrollment is 19.8% Asian, reflecting its Hmong community.
