Berlin is a civil town of 949 residents (2020 census) in Marathon County (GEOID 5507306975). It is not the City of Berlin in Green Lake County. The DOA estimates 964 residents as of January 1, 2025. A chairman and two supervisors meet on the second Tuesday at the Town of Berlin Center on Berlin Lane, with Athens and Merrill mailing addresses. The Wausau School District covers nearly all of the town. The county board created the town in 1859, and German farm families settled it from 1856. The town is publishing a 2026 local-history book, Berlin Memories.

The Marathon County board created the town of Berlin in February 1859, and the first election, held at the house of John Kopplin, chose William Drost as chairman.

German farm settlers made some of the county's oldest farm settlements in Berlin in 1856 and 1857, coming for the sole purpose of farming.
