A cyclone in the late 1880s damaged the village, and a 1906 fire started by a passing locomotive burned its timber supply. The first school opened in 1873.

Tradition holds the name came from the auburn hair of the Connor children; another tradition says it was carried over from Auburndale, Massachusetts. Wikipedia dates the founding to 1872, one year later than the village site.

William D. Connor, a Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin, was the son of village founder Robert Connor.
